Damariscotta Oysters

The Oysters of Damariscotta

When you think of Maine, you think of lobsters and believe me, I enjoyed sampling the different variations of lobster rolls across the state. I also intently listened to heated debates concerning whether or not mayonnaise is allowed on one. What you don’t think of is oysters, and yet, you should. In fact, they might deserve to be at the top of the order. That is because a little town called Damariscotta, Maine, may have the best raw oysters in the country. I qualify that statement by emphasizing “raw oysters” as I would never put any plateful of oysters before that of infamous chargrilled oysters served at the Acme Oyster House in New Orleans. That being said, the oysters of Damariscotta are truly something special and will always be associated with the Dirigo state.

Apparently I am not the only one who Damariscotta oysters in such high esteem. Many consider the area to be the ultimate destination for oyster lovers as the Damariscotta River and its estuaries produce a unique oyster crop that is recognized around world for diversity of flavor and quality. A tradition of bottom-planting results in slower growth, stronger shells and richer flavor. The town organizes its annual Damariscotta Oyster Celebration, which features an international oyster chef competition as well as a shucking contest featuring contestants from across the globe.

The unfortunate thing is that we knew nothing about this until we had a this plate of enticing edibles placed in front of us.

We got these while having dinner at King Eider’s Pub in Damariscotta. As you can see, these aren’t the small generic oysters we are all usually accustomed to. Both Linda and I can affirmatively vouch for their fantastic flavor The bartender there was vastly entertaining to boot. Their is also a great wine store down the street boasting wines from all across the globe including my Montalcino, Italy. If you are planning a vacation to the great state of Maine, I would highly suggest Damariscotta for a few hours of succulent eating enjoyment.
